Chapter Thirteen

Deb lets me help with the edits. I guess that makes sense because I’ve edited my YouTube channel for years. But my methods are pretty elementary compared to the magic on her computer screen. She’s switching between shots at a crazy speed that should be reserved for Richard when the police show up at my apartment complex.

“What are you even doing? You’re going so fast that you’re hurting my eyes.”

“You have your own shit to edit. Stop bugging me. Nobody likes a backseat editor.”

We’re in Deb’s apartment, which is a lot more like mine than Rhett’s mansion. The front room is so crowded with computers and camera equipment, there’s barely space for the tiny loveseat I’m currently sharing with her pit bull, Chomper. He’s been aggressively cuddling with me since I stepped foot into the apartment. His wide snout nudges my hand again.

“Dude, I have to work,” I tell him for the millionth time.

“You’re on his couch. As far as he’s concerned, you’re there to pet him,” Deb says.

I don’t mention that it’s the only couch. Mostly because Chomper is adorable. I mean, sure, he has a drooling problem, and these jeans were new, but whatever. Like Deb said, it is his couch.

Deb spins in her office chair until she’s facing me.

“Can we have a chat for a second?” she asks in a tone that makes it pretty clear this chat isn’t optional.

I close my laptop. “About what?”

“About Rhett,” she says. “If you’re after his money, you should quit while you’re ahead. When my Uncle William died, he left Rhett in charge of the Donovan Fellowship, but he put Rhett’s brother, Martin, in charge of the estate. Martin’s never going to let Rhett bond with anyone who isn’t a blue blood. He’s exactly like his father. William never let Rhett bond to his ex-husband either.”

“Are you saying that they got married, but never bonded?” I ask.

“That’s right.”

I can’t believe that.

“And Rhett’s ex agreed to that?”

“Yep. Rhett wanted to bond, but his ex wouldn’t do it because Martin threatened to cut Rhett off. His ex was a lot more interested in the Donovan fortune than he ever was in Rhett.”

God. That’s terrible. I just assumed Rhett went through an unbonding procedure. It’s expensive to get medical work like that done, but Rhett certainly has the money.

Deb sits back in her chair. “I like you. But Rhett has a tendency to fall for the wrong guys. So I just wanted you to know that if you hurt him, I will cut off your balls and feed them to Chomper. That’s all.”

She turns around and starts switching between shots like a mad woman again.

I look down at Chomper. More of his drool dribbles onto my leg. It’s white and kind of stringy, like a shoelace.

“Would you really eat my balls?” I ask.

“He ate one of my dirty socks yesterday. He’s not picky,” Deb says.

Maybe I should fear for my nether regions, but I don’t. Not for a minute.

“Deb?”

“What? I’m trying to edit.”

“There’s no way in hell that I’m breaking up with Rhett.
